As United States – Cuba relations open up, we at the Williamsport Community Concert Association open our season with the scintillating Havana-based Habana Sax. Begun as a classical saxaphone quartet, Habana Sax added percussion and incorporated influences of Spain, Africa and Brazil. This amazing quintet has won acclaim around the world with the sounds of bolero, mambo, rhumba, salsa and other exciting rhythms. Come join us and be transported into the ambience of the tropics and “the perfume of the music of Cuba.”
Formed in Leningrad - now St. Petersburg - in 1943, the Accordion Virtuosi of Russia is an ensemble of 37 young accordionists, Russian bayan, string and keyboard players and percussionists. This group has won awards throughout Europe, Asia and Africa, and they received standing ovations on their first U.S. tour in 2014. Their repertoire ranges from classical to contemporary, from folk music to rock, and at every performance they astound audiences with their technical skill and spirit.
Top competitors on “Britain’s Got Talent,” sell-out performers in the U.K., The Jive Aces will bring their high-energy Jump, Jive and Swing music to this side of the Atlantic when they travel from New York City to Williamsport for our yellow zoot suit special show. Music from greats like Louis Prima, Cab Calloway, Benny Goodman, Louis Armstrong and Sammy Davis, Jr., plus their own superb originals, will have audiences out of their seats in every section of the Community Arts Center.
The Akropolis Reed Quintet “explodes with infectious energy and intensity.” Oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon and bass clarinet join perfectly together in a performance of modern compositions framed by classical music spanning four centuries. Winners of numerous awards, including the prestigious 2015 Fischoff Educator Award, the Akropolis Reed Quintet will take listeners on an extraordinary musical adventure as they play with “imagination, infallible musicality and huge vitality.” This concert will also feature appearances by students from area middle and high schools and colleges.
We complete our 2015-16 season with the Valinor Quartet. This all-acoustic group of musicians from the U.S., Russia and England play a unique combination of music ranging from classical to gypsy jazz, from movie soundtracks, Irish reels, klezmer and tango to The Beatles “with style and global flair.” True to our tradition of “Bringing a World of Music Home” to Williamsport, the Valinor Quartet will transport us to Argentina, Uruguay, Ireland, France and Russia—to name just a few. We are thrilled to present this up and coming ensemble for its first ever performance in our region.
In 2014 the Williamsport Community Concert Association moved its concert series from the Scottish Rite Auditorium to the Community Arts Center, a beautiful, historic venue with larger capacity and convenient parking for our ticket subscribers.
